This collection of historical fiction books will help kids see how events from the past helped shape the world they know today. Introducing events and key historical figures through picture books, however, is a very powerful way to long ago events to life. Many wonder why they must learn about people and events from so long ago. The American Girl series about Kaya, a Native girl living in the Pacific Northwest in the 1760s, is a good fictional option as well.History can be a tough subject to get kids engaged in. Mann’s book, Before Columbus, spans both North and South America, and goes way, way further back than Colonial America, but is notable for being a book for kids about Native life that doesn’t center around interactions with settlers. But if you want an account of Native culture outside of contact with whites in early America, you’re going to be hard-pressed to find an example.
